Sore throat treatment in Huntingdon.
Most sore throats clear up on their own, but some need antibiotics. Under NHS Pharmacy First our pharmacists can assess you and treat you the same day — no GP appointment or referral required.
What happens in the consultation
- A private consultation to check your symptoms and temperature
- We use the recognised FeverPAIN and Centor scoring tools to judge whether antibiotics are likely to help
- NHS antibiotics supplied on the spot where clinically appropriate
- Self-care and pain relief advice if antibiotics aren't the right answer
- Adults and children aged 5 and over
- Symptoms of acute sore throat (pharyngitis or tonsillitis)
Free NHS consultation. Standard NHS prescription charges apply if medicine is issued and you're not exempt.

Pharmacy First isn't right for every situation. Contact your GP, call NHS 111, or seek emergency care if any of the following apply:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing your own saliva
- A muffled or 'hot potato' voice, or drooling
- Severe one-sided throat pain with a swollen neck
- Symptoms lasting longer than a week and getting worse
Common questions
Will I definitely get antibiotics?
No. Most sore throats are viral and antibiotics won't help. We use national NHS scoring tools to decide, and we'll supply antibiotics when the assessment shows they're likely to benefit you.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free on the NHS. If medicine is supplied, standard NHS prescription charges apply unless you're exempt.
Do I need an appointment?
You can walk in during opening hours, but booking online guarantees you a slot with a pharmacist.
Can my child be seen?
Yes — the sore throat pathway covers adults and children aged 5 and over.
