What happens in the consultation
- A private consultation to review how long symptoms have lasted and how severe they are
- Assessment against the NHS Pharmacy First sinusitis pathway
- A high-dose steroid nasal spray or NHS antibiotics where clinically appropriate
- Clear self-care advice if the infection is likely to be viral
- Adults and children aged 12 and over
- Acute sinusitis (symptoms of less than 12 weeks)

What to look out for
- Pain, pressure or tenderness across the face, especially around the eyes and cheeks
- A blocked or runny nose with thick discharge
- Reduced sense of smell
- Headache, toothache or a high temperature
What helps at home
- Steam inhalation and warm compresses over the face
- Saline nasal rinses or sprays
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain
- Rest and plenty of fluids
When to get more urgent help
Pharmacy First isn't right for every situation. Contact your GP, call NHS 111, or seek emergency care if any of the following apply:
- Swelling or redness around the eye, or changes to your vision
- A severe headache with neck stiffness or confusion
- Symptoms on one side only that keep coming back
- Symptoms lasting longer than 12 weeks
Common questions
How long should I wait before coming in?
Most sinusitis improves within 2 to 3 weeks. Come and see us sooner if symptoms are severe, or if they've lasted more than 10 days without improving.
Will I be given antibiotics?
Only if the assessment supports it. Many cases respond better to a steroid nasal spray and self-care.
Is the service free?
Yes, the consultation is free on the NHS. Standard prescription charges apply to any medicine supplied unless you're exempt.
Can under-12s be seen?
Not under this pathway — please contact your GP for children under 12.
