Starting a new medicine? We'll help you get it right.
The New Medicine Service is a free NHS service to help you understand your new medication, manage your condition and get the best possible results from your treatment.
How the service can help you
Taking medication as prescribed matters, but you may have questions, experience side effects or find your new medicine doesn't fit easily into your daily routine. The service gives you the chance to talk it through with your pharmacist and get personalised support.
By helping you use your medication safely and effectively, the service may also help reduce avoidable GP appointments and hospital visits.
The service is for eligible patients who have been prescribed a medicine for the first time to treat certain conditions covered by the NHS New Medicine Service.
Not sure if you qualify? Just ask — our pharmacist can advise you.

Ongoing support in three steps.
The service is designed to give you support as you adjust to your new medication — not just a one-off chat.
- 1Advice about your new medicine
When you collect your new medication, your pharmacist will explain how to take it and how the New Medicine Service can support you. You'll be asked whether you'd like to take part.
- 2Your first consultation
Around 7–14 days after starting your medicine, we'll invite you to a confidential consultation at a time that suits you — in our private consultation room, over the phone or by video.
- 3Follow-up consultation
Around 14–21 days later, your pharmacist will arrange a follow-up to review how you're getting on, discuss any ongoing concerns and give further advice if needed.
Getting ready for your consultations
To get the most out of your time with the pharmacist, we recommend you:
What happens afterwards?
You may not need any further support.
Your pharmacist can suggest practical ways to help you take your medication as prescribed.
If appropriate, your pharmacist may recommend your GP reviews your medication. They can send your GP a note explaining the concerns discussed, and you can request a copy.
Will my information be shared?
Your privacy matters. Before taking part, you'll be asked to give consent for relevant information from your consultations to be shared where necessary — with your GP (if your pharmacist needs to tell them about a problem with your medication or recommend a review), with NHS England (to help monitor the quality of the service), and with NHS England and the NHS Business Services Authority (to support the administration and payment of the service). If you don't give consent for the required information sharing, you won't be able to take part in the service — but your pharmacist can still give you advice about your medication.
Common questions
What is the New Medicine Service?
It's a free NHS service to help you understand and get the best results from a newly prescribed medicine, with ongoing support from our pharmacist over the first few weeks.
How much does it cost?
Nothing — the New Medicine Service is free on the NHS for eligible patients.
Who can use the service?
It's for people who have been prescribed a medicine for the first time to treat certain conditions covered by the NHS New Medicine Service. Ask our pharmacist and they'll check whether you're eligible.
Where do the consultations take place?
Wherever suits you — in our private consultation room at the pharmacy, over the telephone, or by video consultation if you'd prefer.
Will my information be shared?
Only with your consent. Before taking part you'll be asked to consent to relevant information being shared — with your GP if your treatment needs reviewing, and with NHS bodies to monitor and administer the service. Without that consent you can't take part in the service, but your pharmacist can still give advice about your medicine when you collect it.
