What happens in the consultation

What to look out for
- A painful, blistering rash on one side of the body, usually in a band
- Tingling, burning or itching in the area before the rash appears
- Feeling generally unwell, with headache or a mild fever
What helps at home
- Keep the rash clean, dry and uncovered where possible
- Wear loose cotton clothing
- Use a cool compress a few times a day
- Avoid contact with pregnant women, newborns and anyone immunosuppressed until blisters crust over
When to get more urgent help
Pharmacy First isn't right for every situation. Contact your GP, call NHS 111, or seek emergency care if any of the following apply:
- A rash near or around the eye
- A weakened immune system, or you're pregnant
- Widespread rash across both sides of the body
- Severe pain that isn't controlled by ordinary painkillers

As soon as you can — antivirals are most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing.
Is shingles contagious?
You can't catch shingles from someone else, but the virus can cause chickenpox in people who've never had it. Avoid vulnerable contacts until the blisters have crusted over.
What if it's been more than 72 hours?
Come in anyway — treatment can still be appropriate in some cases, and we'll advise on pain control or refer you if needed.

The consultation is free on the NHS; standard prescription charges apply to medicine unless you're exempt.
