Most insect bites settle by themselves, but some become infected. Under NHS Pharmacy First our pharmacists can assess and treat infected insect bites in anyone aged 1 and over — same day, no GP needed.
What happens in the consultation
- A private consultation and examination of the bite

- NHS antibiotics where clinically appropriate
- Wound care advice, or onward referral if the infection is spreading
- Adults and children aged 1 and over
- An insect bite or sting showing signs of infection

What to look out for
- Increasing redness, warmth and swelling spreading from the bite
- Pain that gets worse rather than better after a few days
- Pus or weeping from the bite
- Feeling unwell or feverish
What helps at home
- Wash the bite with soap and water and avoid scratching
- A cold compress to reduce swelling
- Antihistamines for itch, paracetamol for pain
- Keep the area clean and watch for spreading redness
When to get more urgent help
Pharmacy First isn't right for every situation. Contact your GP, call NHS 111, or seek emergency care if any of the following apply:
- Rapidly spreading redness, or a red streak running from the bite
- Difficulty breathing, facial swelling or dizziness (seek emergency help)
- A bite from a tick with a spreading bullseye rash
- A high fever or feeling very unwell

How do I know if a bite is infected?
Infected bites usually get more red, swollen and painful after a few days, may weep pus, and can leave you feeling unwell.
Will I get antibiotics?
Only if the assessment shows infection that needs treating. Many inflamed bites are a reaction rather than an infection.
Can children be seen?
Yes — anyone aged 1 and over is covered by this pathway.

You can walk in during opening hours, or book online to guarantee a slot.
