What happens in the consultation
- A private consultation and examination of the affected skin

- NHS antibiotic cream or tablets where clinically appropriate
- Advice on stopping it spreading at home, school or nursery
- Adults and children aged 1 and over
- Non-bullous impetigo (localised, crusted sores)

What to look out for
- Red sores or blisters, often around the nose and mouth
- Sores that burst and leave golden-brown crusts
- Itching or soreness in the affected area
- Spread to other areas through scratching
What helps at home
- Wash the affected area gently with soap and warm water
- Don't share towels, flannels or bedding
- Keep nails short and discourage scratching
- Stay off school or work until sores crust over or 48 hours after starting antibiotics
When to get more urgent help
Pharmacy First isn't right for every situation. Contact your GP, call NHS 111, or seek emergency care if any of the following apply:
- Large fluid-filled blisters (bullous impetigo)
- Fever, or the infection spreading rapidly
- Recurrent episodes
- A weakened immune system, or a baby under 1 year old
